Why is it so “tough at the top”
There’s a familiar phrase whispered in management team meetings, typed into late‑night emails, and spoken with a chuckle that doesn’t quite hide the truth: “It’s tough at the top.”
People often assume that managers, leaders, and executives are somehow built differently — more resilient, more confident, more immune to pressure. But after ten years working as a workplace coach and mentor, I can say with absolute certainty that leaders feel the strain just as deeply as anyone else. They simply carry it more quietly.
Across hundreds of conversations, I’ve heard the same kind of things consistently:
“I can’t talk to anyone.”
“Everyone expects me to be strong — I can’t show weakness.”
“If I show weakness, I’m worried my peers will jump on it to undermine me.”
These aren’t dramatic statements. They’re everyday truths for people in positions of responsibility. And they reveal something important: leadership can be profoundly isolating, even when everything looks fine on the surface.
This is exactly why leaders need a space to talk — not only when they’re struggling, but especially when they’re feeling well. Unloading the weight of work to an objective and skilled counsellor can help you make sense of things again.
