What happens at my first therapy session?
Most people arrive at their first session feeling a mix of relief and uncertainty. That’s completely normal. You’re meeting someone new, talking about things that matter, and you don’t yet know how it will feel. My job is to make that first step as steady and straightforward as possible.
We’ll start by slowing things down. You don’t need a perfect story or a clear goal. You can talk, pause, backtrack, or sit with your thoughts for a moment. I’ll ask gentle questions to help us find a starting point, but there’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready for.
We’ll also cover the practical bits — how sessions work, what confidentiality means, and what you can expect from me. People often say this part helps them relax because it takes away the guesswork.
The first session isn’t about fixing everything. It’s about getting a feel for whether this is a space where you can be honest and unfiltered. You’re assessing me just as much as I’m getting to know you.
By the end, you should have a sense of direction and a clearer idea of what working together might look like. It’s a beginning, not a test — and taking that first step is already progress.
